Lead oxide (PbO) is an inorganic compound used primarily in the production of lead-acid batteries, glass, and ceramics. It comes in two forms, litharge (red or yellow) and massicot (yellow), both of which are crystalline solids. In addition to its role in batteries, lead oxide acts as a flux in glassmaking, enhancing optical properties, and as a pigment in paints. Despite its industrial importance, lead oxide is highly toxic, requiring careful handling to avoid lead poisoning, which can severely impact the nervous system and overall health.
